Empowerment through Christian Coaching

Coaching Overview
Personal coaching is a growing profession which has moved beyond the sports and performing arenas into corporate offices and the workplace.  Coaching also has a vital role to play within the church and mission community.

Research indicates that most Christians feel disempowered.  There are reasons for this.  One key reason relates to people not knowing their God-given design and passions.  Another is unbiblical, dualistic thinking that separates the whole of life into two different categories: what is spiritual and really important, and what is material or secular and less important.  As a result, many Christians feel not validated in their gifts and in their desire to make a kingdom difference.

Missionaries may receive adequate pre-field training but often inadequate on-field development.  On-the-job field development is a key factor in missionary longevity and effectiveness.  Missionaries face unique challenges and therefore need the best possible support and care, a key element of which can be provided through coaching which will expand ministry impact while simultaneously growing field workers in their character, spirituality, and relational skills.

Staff often find themselves in the same position as missionaries, particularly in remote offices.  They need on-the-job development which could be provided through coaching!

What is Coaching?
Coaching is an ongoing intentional conversation that empowers a person or team to fully live out God's calling in their life and ministry.  Coaching is not counseling or for those who need remedial help.  Coaches help people to grow by building vision, skills and strengths, and by facilitating a process that addresses problems that left unaddressed, may later develop into disabling issues requiring counseling.  It's tough for anyone to develop without help and for missionaries this is an even greater challenge with the additional pressures faced when living cross-culturally.

With coaching, individuals get to see theiri blind spots in a safe environment and can receive help to close the gap between where they are and where they want to be.  Coaching occurs around topics selected by the person being coached, who sets the agenda and determines his/her goals.  This generates self-accountability, greater self-awareness, and a heightened understanding of effectively stewarding what God has put inside of them.

Coaching works!
Coaching works because it brings out the best in a person - what the Creator put in!  Studies show that ongoing coaching produces 300% better results than training alone.  A coach will support an individual in learning new ways to learn - listening to their heart and the Holy Spirit - then take action to reshape thier life around that learning.  Coaching works on the premise that an individual can create their own best answers (as believers they can discover Holy-Spirit inspired solutions), but may need a hand in their process.

Proative, Preventative and Protective
Personal coaching is a vital component in helping ensure personal and ongoing missionary effectiveness and development, whilst also providing preventative and protective measures to help safeguard missionary health and assist with reducing missionary attrition.
