John Wycliffe

English Bible translator and Reformer

John Wycliffe lived in 14th century England and was an Oxford University professor and Bible scholar.  He concluded from his own study of the Bible that if people of a society would govern their own lives, rejecting wrong and doing right voluntarily, there would be no need for a government of external force to control them.

Wycliffe believed putting the Bible in the hands of the people was the means by which this change of government could be accomplished.  By reading the Bible and knowing God personally, people could reform their own lives in accordance with Biblical principles in every area of life.  Such individual transformation in Christian character had the potential to then spread throughout society and become a source of liberty to all.

He therefore translated the Bible into common English and his followers taught people to read so they could study, understand the Scriptures and apply them.  Wycliffe's vision began to spread throughout Europe and a reformation movement - the Protestant Reformation - was ignited that changed the course of history.

Today, Wycliffe Bible Translators, named in honour of John Wycliffe, is one of the largest international organisations dedicated to translating the Scriptures into every living language in the world.
